Spain’s La Liga is famed around the world for spectacular football, dramatic title races and the biggest derby in soccer – the El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona. This year, these two teams are hot favourites to win the league once again.
Barcelona controversially recruited Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, to form a terrifying strike force alongside Messi and Suarez. But Los Colchoneros have spent the money wisely, including on the Spurs right-back Kieran Trippier, former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, and Benfica’s Joao Felix. Aged just 19, the Portuguese playmaker cost a cool 126 million euros. No pressure then.
Real Madrid had its usual transfer splurge, picking up Eden Hazard from Chelsea, Luka Jovic from Eintracht and Mendy from Lyon. The big one – Neymar – got away, however, and Gareth Bale will start the season upfront, despite coach Zidane publicly stating that he doesn’t rate him. Awkward.
